....
Today in Bulgaria we are celebrating March first and Baba Marta (Baba means grandmother and Marta comes from March). This is holiday and on this day we put on ourselves small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn. We are wearing it until we see swallow/martin or stork. This piece of adornment is called martenitsa (this is pronounced  [ˈmartɛnit͡sa] ). We believe that the martenitsa will make us healthier, the white as a color symbolizes purity, red is a symbol of life and passion. Also Baba Marta tradition is related to welcoming the upcoming spring. The month of March, according to Bulgarian folklore, marks the beginning of springtime. Therefore, the first day of March is a traditional holiday associated with sending off winter and welcoming spring. So happy Baba Marta to you, too :o)!
